Tmoyan set down the far-talker and looked out the window, puzzled. His commander had just ordered him and Dsanik to travel up the mountains south of the city to meet with Gkeze, the famous old astronomer that had first warned them of the Messenger's impact on Traenah. The scientist was as old as Tmoyan's second-past-father, but Tmoyan did not perceive any diminution of his intellect. Many in the military laughed at the old scientist, thinking him weak, but his mind was anything but. Tmoyan greatly respected Gkeze. He recognized the truth that had more People listened to Gkeze, instead of the rantings of the Messengerite preacher Lanos and his loyal apologist Ilrosa, many more would have been saved. At least, Tmoyan thought, there was some justice in the fact that Lanos had died with his delusion. But then, he did so with a legion of admiring followers. Some unknown person had given Ilrosa the end he deserved, too. Tmoyan often wondered how that had happened; who had learned who Ntasik really was, but he and Dsanik had expediently declared Ilrosa's death a suicide, and there was no one to contest that conclusion. He was perfectly content with that solution.

Tmoyan pushed his latent anger against Lanos and his ilk aside as he ordered up an autowheel to take up the mountain. Shortly, Dsanik landed and taxied his craft to its designated parking spot, first in line on the left. Dsanik strolled in, happy to have been airborne for a long sortie to the northern plains.

"Get changed," Tmoyan said. "Command wants us to go see Gkeze."

Dsanik looked at his friend in surprise but hustled to the pilots' lounge to take off his flight gear and put on a proper uniform.

They traveled for two spedset in silence, Tmoyan driving the narrow road up to the observatory. It was half a long sixteen of mileah above and eight long sixteens of mileah south of Traedenath, it had clear, dark skies and very little extraneous light or atmospheric particulates to dim the view. The viewing there was better than back on Traenah, Gkeze often said. They arrived just before dark and were ushered quickly to Gkeze's workspace. The old man rose to greet them.

"Thank you for coming. I have something very interesting to show you. But, please sit.”

"What is it that you want to tell us, sir?" Tmoyan asked.

"When we first arrived, a high priority for the astrometric community was to understand the details of Mehonnh. We knew our old star Tetanna very well, its habits and phases of activity. We needed to understand Mehonnh to see if there would be large storms with dangerous levels of radiation flooding our new home."

Dsanik squirmed impatiently. "Yes, sir, I am sure this is all — "

"Let him finish," Tmoyan said.

A soft voice with a distinctive edge came from behind them. "As always, the warrior class is impatient for quick answers?"

The pilots turned to see that a female scientist had quietly entered the room behind them. Tmoyan instantly recognized her as the astronomer from East, an interesting, attractive female.
